Nathan Cool
WaveCast founder and forecaster
Nathan Cool has been a forecaster and writer since 1996 for Surfing magazine, Surfer magazine, WetSand, GrindTV, and other media. Nathan started WaveCast in the 1990s, and after the collapse of Surfing and Surfer magazines in 2020, Nathan continued to maintain WaveCast and still issues his detailed forecast for SoCal three times per week.
Since the mid 1990s Nathan has tracked every Pacific storm system that brought surf to the west coast of the U.S., Hawaii, and Central America. Nathan also worked as a senior level software engineer and systems architect developing automation software for wave, weather, and wind prediction as well, and worked on the redesign of NOAA's Weather Radio broadcast alert system. Nathan has written books on climate change and surf forecasting, including Surf, Flood, Fire and Mud, and The WaveCast Guide to Surf Forecasting. Nathan has also given lectures on climate and earth sciences at Loyola Marymount University.
Now retired from engineering, and still maintaining WaveCast, Nathan also works as a real estate photographer in Southern California, has written best-selling books on photography, and teaches real estate photography as well.
